First Day of School

Dear first day of school,

Man, you look different. When we walked out of school on March 13, I don’t think anyone could have ever imagined what was going to happen! …especially our homes. We are moms to FIVE boys total, SEVEN if you count the husbands, and NINE if you count the dogs 😅. So, you see where I am going with this, right? We clean one room and it’s dirty before we finish cleaning another. There are open snack boxes on the counter, there are bowls under the bed, and there is trash on the floor. Why not, right?!

How many moms just nodded their head in agreement and, exasperation, at the same time. We are here to help, as we take back our “Polished Homes” one little nook at a time.

I read. Like all the time. At some point I quit really watching tv and started reading more. I think it’s because I live in a house full of boys. And some of them are LOUD- naturally. Meaning you can probably here them as you are reading this, wherever you are :).

Sometimes I feel like I can’t find a new book and I always get super excited waiting for the new releases. I was super pumped to run across this one – it was good. Really good. I turned the pages fast (actually tapped my kindle) because I could not figure out how it was going to end. So many pieces of the puzzle had to weave together in order for it all to finally make sense. Beauty, power, hurt, fear and love all take place behind the scenes amongst some of NYC fashion elite. If you are looking for a new book, give it a read!

Sometimes all you need is a WHITE table lamp!

It’s ironic, right? We push color all the time at Polished Picks (yes, navy is a color!!) yet our first post is about a white table lamp. Why? I don’t know really. Honestly, we are making this up as we go. My children are busy doing their school work and learning how to navigate Google Classrooms and PowerSchool, and teach themselves Spanish, and video their Wax Museum and figure out how to post it. I decided if they could learn all that at age 12 and 9, then I could learn how to blog, and be productive while they are.

Truth be told, it’s not as easy as it seems. So, I had to stick with a relatively safe topic and a white table lamp just seemed to be the thing. There’s just something about white especially when paired with gold. It’s cool, it’s crisp, it’s bright – it seems simple, but it can be so much more. It can ground a room filled with color, or be your color.

Hi! Or as we say in North Carolina, “Hey, ya’ll!” Welcome to Polished Home – a home decor and lifestyle blog, where we hope you will follow along as we share posts of beautiful rooms, things we think you might like, and more. We are SO excited you are here!

Several years ago, we started a vintage furniture business where we stared at our phones constantly and drooled over the newest greatest things. From that, we grew a love of talking about what we “needed” in our homes. In our minds, no room is ever finished (unless you are moving and funny how quickly you can get it together). We are constantly adding, re-arranging, and ever-changing. That’s our secret though! …our husbands haven’t really noticed…or, if they have, they are just rolling with it.

We are Fran and Mandy – moms to a total of 5 boys and 5 crazy fur babies. She one-ups me in both categories. It’s not a happy hour if she isn’t lounging in her bed with a good glass of red wine and trashy tv. I love a cold Chardonnay and a good book or my “stories” (The Young and the Restless). We both LOVE a good workout and force the other to cook- many times we have the same meal each night so we won’t waste a good idea.

Help us spread the word… we are new to this, but we are going to try our best to rock it (to prove we can, and for you).
